I recently took my 14 year-old to see a nurse-midwife for care. I knew she had been sexually active and although she had been using condoms, I felt that going on birth control pills would be a good idea, in addition to condoms. When we got there, my daughter was shy and not very communicative. I knew she was scared too. It was difficult for the midwife to get the information she needed from her so I decided to help. I told my daughter: “Amanda, you always need to tell this woman everything. She’s here to help you and keep you safe.” My daughter and I have a pretty good relationship and when she heard me say this she was more able to relax and feel like she could answer the midwife’s questions. We both left feeling as though we got the care Amanda needed and had established a relationship with someone who understood her.
